Knock, knock! Tío Ricky is in town and he needs his nephew Enrique’s help! He doesn’t speak any English, so his nephew has to translate for him at the store, the post office, and the bank. But speaking Spanish feels like such a chore...until Enrique finds himself in a situation where his bilingual skills become life-saving. Enrique soon discovers that speaking two languages isn’t just helpful—it’s powerful, and it can strengthen family ties in ways he never imagined. Tío Ricky

“As a 35 year Teacher veteran and Bilingual educator I am always seeking children’s books that are culturally affirming and linguistically diverse. Mariter Bella’s beautful story of multilingualism and multiculturalism is a must have! Not only does it shine a light on the bilingual-biliterate superpower but it allows children who translate to be seen and heard. My students LOVED it and felt empowered to continue on their linguistic journey. They have a new goal to make a larger impact in the world using both Spanish and English. ¡Bravo! Every single teacher needs to have this book in their ckassroom. Now-more than ever! “

A delightful bilingual book about family

I enjoyed reading this delightful, bilingual book about a young boy who translates Spanish into English for his visiting uncle. The boy gets frustrated but then realizes how vital his abilities are and how helpful he can be to his family when his uncle finds himself in an emergency. I also loved reading the author and illustrator notes in the back matter. This book would be a wonderful addition to any home, classroom, or library shelf!

So Helpful!

Tio Ricky as just come to the United States and it's hard to learn a new language. This book is about how - many times - children are asked to translate for their relatives and it can be exciting and important but also demanding and draining. This book is special to me because my Ukrainian-speaking grandfather spoke no English and my father was his translator. Also my husband served as translator for his Greek father.

This book opens the door to asking so many questions about immigrating, relocating and what family does for one another to make them feel safe, understood and welcome. I highly recommend this book, especially for the conversations that it will generate after the story has been read.

Simply Lovely and Timely

Maritere Bellas’ bilingual children’s book, Tío Ricky Doesn’t Speak English / Tío Ricky no habla inglés, is a heartwarming and timely story that celebrates family, culture, and the beauty of language. With warmth and authenticity, Bellas captures a familiar experience for many bicultural and bilingual families—the moment when loved ones from different linguistic worlds come together.
